The DVD-ROM included with this book contains media files for the exercises and hands-on projects. The lessons should be read sequentially, as information and concepts from earlier lessons are occasionally referenced in later lessons. Exercises also have corresponding Pro Tools and Unity files on the included DVD. Each exercise is optional, and should take an additional 60 minutes or so to work through. Additionally, at the end of each lesson (except for Lesson 1) is an exercise, which is a second chance for you to work through the materials learned in the lesson, but in a new game environment. Each lesson has a walkthrough on the DVD, which is a Pro Tools session and Unity file that you can work on as you read through the lesson, to help reinforce concepts and techniques as you use them. This book is broken into eight lessons, each of which should take approximately 90 minutes to work through. With this framework in place, you will be able to incorporate the sounds you are building as you work your way through the book into an actual game environment. For this book a team of game designers and programmers has built that basic framework for you using the Unity game engine, one of the most robust commercially available game engines around. To do this generally requires working directly with a game programmer to set up individual triggers for every sound event in the game. Although Pro Tools is terrific for creating content, it is strictly a linear editor-it has no capacity to work inside a game. The other main goal of this book is to provide you with a basic introduction to interactivity in an actual game environment. One of the primary goals of this book is to introduce you to the Pro Tools features that someone getting started working with game audio may find most helpful. In some sense, Pro Tools’ great flexibility is also one of its biggest hurdles-it does so much that it can be difficult for someone just learning the tool to know which parts of the program are best suited for the tasks they are trying to accomplish. Pro Tools is well known for its strength in film post-production and music production, but many people don’t realize that it is the main workhorse for many professionals in the game audio business as well. Welcome to Pro Tools 10 for Game Audio and the Avid Learning Series. Whether you're learning on your own or pursuing formal Pro Tools certification through an Avid Authorized Training Partner, PRO TOOLS 101: AN INTRODUCTION TO PRO TOOLS 10 is the first step on the road to mastery of Pro Tools 10.Pro Tools® 10 for Game Audio Introduction The book includes hands-on projects, with accompanying source files on DVD, that drive home the lessons, laying the perfect foundation for becoming a Pro Tools expert. PRO TOOLS 101: AN INTRODUCTION TO PRO TOOLS 10 quickly and effectively brings new users up to speed on the basics, from understanding the Pro Tools file structure and interface to creating a session, recording audio and MIDI, importing media, editing, mixing, and more. Newly updated to cover the latest Pro Tools release, version 10, this new edition of PRO TOOLS 101 is the fastest, most systematic introduction to learning the fundamentals of the world's most popular recording software. If you want extreme Scotch whisky enthusiasts to clutch their pearls, you can use Macallan Whisky as the base for a cocktail – although they would probably recommend using a cheaper liquor. You can also add a few drops of water or have it over ice. Macallan, like other finely crafted Scotch whiskies, is best enjoyed neat. In general, Glenfiddich has a slightly lower price than Macallan Whisky, but they both also produce some extremely high-priced variants. Like Macallan Whisky and Glenlivet, Glenfiddich also has an extensive product line. Even though it is the top producer, it is also respected as a very high-quality spirit. Glenfiddich is recognized as the best-selling single malt whisky in the world. Macallan is known for its rich flavor and high price, whereas Glenlivet is known for a lighter flavor and a lower price point. They are, in fact, the top-selling single malt whisky in the United States and second in the world. Glenlivet was also founded in 1824 and produces single malt Scotch whisky. Glenlivet is a distillery based in Moray, Scotland. The two most obvious alternatives to Macallan whisky would be their fellow Speyside single malt Scotch whisky purveyors Glenlivet and Glenfiddich. Macallan Whisky has an extensive product line. Macallan Whisky Prices, Variations & Sizes Macallan Whisky is currently a subsidiary of the Erdington Group, a Glasgow, Scotland-based spirit company. Macallan attributes their success to the time, money, and precision they use in selecting only the most extraordinary oak casks. No doubt the most important pillar is the Exceptional Oak Casks. Unlike some whisky producers, they never add artificial color. They use small and uniquely shaped stills during the distilling process to create a specific flavor. Macallan whisky chooses quality at every turn. The thing that separates Macallan Whisky from the crowd, and has sustained them for so many years, is their aforementioned Six Pillars. The result of that process is a liquid, known as wort, that is then fermented, distilled, and aged in casks. The original name of the distillery was actually Maghellan which combined the two Gaelic words “magh”, meaning fertile ground, and “ellan”, as an homage to a monk who presided over a local church dating back to the 1400s.Īt its most basic level, whisky is made by heating water, yeast, and malted barley to create a mash. Farmers had been producing whisky on the land where Alexander Reid founded his distillery for hundreds of years prior. Today Speyside, shorthand for the region near the river Spey, produces more whisky than any other region in Scotland. This region is known for its lush countryside, fishing, and its Scotch whisky. Macallan Whisky was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid near the river Spey in Scotland. The Six Pillars are the foundation of everything they do and a constant reminder to never let up when it comes to producing the highest quality Scotch whisky. The Six Pillars: Spiritual Home, Curiously Small Stills, Finest Cut, Exceptional Oak Casks, Natural Color, and Peerless Spirit. Macallan Whisky’s obsession with quality is further evidenced by its creation of the Six Pillars. Macallan is known for its extremely rich and complex flavors. Macallan Whisky is the one staying up all night to perfect its product. Macallan Whisky is the Michael Jordan of spirits due to their self-described obsession with quality. The second reason was that Jordan had the most attractive-looking drink sitting next to him, and his cigar, during many of the interview segments.Įver the spokesman, it turned out that he was actually drinking his own brand of tequila, but if he was a Scotch drinker you can be sure that he would be drinking Macallan Whisky. The first reason was his laser-focused compulsion to be the best. Michael Jordan captivated viewers in the 2020s “The Last Dance” miniseries for a couple of reasons. The idea of implicit memory helps explain how infants are able to learn. There is no way to tell someone how to ride a bicycle a person has to learn by doing it. Procedural memory allows us to perform complex tasks, even though we may not be able to explain to others how we do them. When we walk from one place to another, speak to another person in English, dial a cell phone, or play a video game, we are using procedural memory. Procedural memory refers to our often unexplainable knowledge of how to do things. As you can see in Figure 8.2 “Types of Memory”, there are three general types of implicit memory: procedural memory, classical conditioning effects, and priming. Implicit memory refers to the influence of experience on behavior, even if the individual is not aware of those influences. However, implicit memory is nevertheless exceedingly important to us because it has a direct effect on our behavior. While explicit memory consists of the things that we can consciously report that we know, implicit memory refers to knowledge that we cannot consciously access. Relearning also allows us to measure memory for procedures like driving a car or playing a piano piece, as well as memory for facts and figures. Relearning can be a more sensitive measure of memory than either recall or recognition because it allows assessing memory in terms of “how much” or “how fast” rather than simply “correct” versus “incorrect” responses. But if you were to work on your French again, you’d learn the vocabulary much faster the second time around. If you have taken some French courses in the past, for instance, you might have forgotten most of the vocabulary you learned. Measures of relearning (or savings) assess how much more quickly information is processed or learned when it is studied again after it has already been learned but then forgotten. Students who do better on a multiple-choice exam will also, by and large, do better on an essay exam (Bridgeman & Morgan, 1996).Ī third way of measuring memory is known as relearning (Nelson, 1985). Although they involve different processes, recall and recognition memory measures tend to be correlated. Recognition, as on multiple-choice test, only involves determining which item from a list seems most correct (Haist, Shimamura, & Squire, 1992). Recall, such as required on essay tests, involves two steps: first generating an answer and then determining whether it seems to be the correct one. Your own experiences taking tests will probably lead you to agree with the scientific research finding that recall is more difficult than recognition. A multiple-choice test is an example of a recognition memory test, a measure of explicit memory that involves determining whether information has been seen or learned before. We rely on our recall memory when we take an essay test, because the test requires us to generate previously remembered information. A recall memory test is a measure of explicit memory that involves bringing from memory information that has previously been remembered. Explicit memory is assessed using measures in which the individual being tested must consciously attempt to remember the information. The post-war setting of the storytelling is a romanticized snapshot of plantation life. Entranced by this folklore, he created a genial but stern character named Uncle Remus – the stereotype of the dialect-speaking "venerable old darkey" – who tells these stories to a rosy-cheeked child referred to as "Miss Sally's little boy." Harris, a white journalist who worked as a teenage newspaper apprentice on a Georgia plantation during the Civil War, heard these stories from African-Americans, while spending many hours in conversation with the inhabitants of the soon to-be-former slave quarters. No one can say for certain when or where it first originated, but in the U.S., the most popular version comes from Joel Chandler Harris' 1880 collection, Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings. Wagner explores how hundreds of variants of this tale, passed on through the oral tradition, are present throughout the world in regions as far-ranging as the Philippines, India, Africa, Corsica, Colombia and Brazil, as well as among several American Indian tribes. Your purchase helps support NPR programming. The question the story addresses is a fundamental one: Who controls access to food and water? Or, more crucially, who controls access to food and water when the rules have been turned upside down by giant forces like colonialism, slavery, global trade and the loss of the commons to enclosures?įar from being a simple folk tale, the tar baby story is "a collective work in political philosophy," says Berkeley professor Bryan Wagner in his fascinating new book The Tar Baby, A Global History.Ĭlose overlay Buy Featured Book Title The Tar Baby Subtitle A Global History Author Bryan Wagner But like all fables, it is a double-barreled affair, with entertainment firing in tandem with a serious message. However, it’s a good opportunity for many people to dive into the world of bourbon whiskey without spending a fortune. This is one of the only mass-produced single barrel selection varieties on the market, and even still, it’s not an entirely single barrel, so it may not be able to claim those rights. You can’t expect too much of a deep finish from shallow palate tasting notes, so while the finish may not be a particularly lofty distinctive taste experience, the overall taste is sweet and satisfying. It’s of medium length, and you’ll notice honey, toffee, and possibly bubble gum. There’s more sweetness in the finish, just to round out your experience. You will immediately taste honey, brown sugar, white pepper, and oak.ĭespite the lack of complexity, this is an enjoyable bourbon whiskey, especially for beginners. There’s not a lot of depth here, but it’s sweet. It’s very easy to distinguish the few aromas within. It’s easy to identify and pick out these aromas, and you may find other interesting scents that I didn’t. Honey-soaked marshmallow lingers a bit longer. The aged oak scent deepens these aromas nicely. You may notice the strong aroma of orange peels and other citruses. The release is ongoing, and the color is a lovely deep gold. The Eagle Rare single barrel statement is no longer listed on the bottle because it moves from one hand bottling line to another during bottling and could contain bourbon from two different barrels (double barrel).
